Agronomic Requirements

Ginger is a tropical crop that requires warm temperatures (75°F to 85°F, or 24°C to 29°C) and humid conditions (70-90% humidity) for growth. It is very sensitive to cold temperatures of 50°F (10°C) or below and cannot tolerate frost without protection.

Ginger requires a consistent and well-distributed water supply throughout the growing season. Water supply is critical for ginger growth, especially during the establishment stage (when first transplanted). The annual rainfall recommendation for ginger growth is 1500-2500 mm (59-98 inches) during the growing season or supplemented with irrigation (Jayashree et al., 2015). However, excessive waterlogging can lead to root rot, so well-drained soils are essential. Dry conditions for about one month before harvest are also recommended (FAO, 2002; HI Ginger Root, 2008).

Ginger grows best on sandy loam, clay loam, and porous deep soils that are well-drained, friable, and rich in organic matter, with a pH of 5.5 to 6.5.

Ginger is a heavy feeder, and the nutrient (N, P, K) recommendation is 67/45/45 pounds per acre for successful ginger root production (TNAU Agritech Portal - Horticulture, 2016). Soil nutrient analysis and necessary soil amendment are strongly recommended each growing season.

Crop Rotation

Crop rotation is essential for ginger production because ginger plants absorb large amounts of nutrients from the soil. Ginger may be grown in the same location for up to two years (growing seasons), but cover cropping over winter and adding soil amendments are strongly encouraged. Crop rotation is necessary to mitigate potential disease and insect pest issues. Otherwise, it can significantly reduce ginger production.
